Alternative hairstyles are ones that stand apart from fashionable, conventional and classic hairstyles. They are best described as unusual, daring, bright, fun, avante-garde, geometric and exaggerated- with elements of punk.

If you want to feel free of fashion, then go for it. Or, if you want to bolster your marketing campaign, then an alternative hairstyle may be a good choice. But beware because most short styles will take some time to grow out, and wild colors may damage your hair (particulary when stripped out or re-colored).

Big and Bold was the main idea for this look. Jagged cut layers gave this hairstyle plenty of texture and attitude, while the vibrant color makes it more for the brave.

Dec. 23--New Year's resolutions for many Americans will mean the latest diets and gym memberships.

But losing weight and keeping it off might be as much about the psychological struggles as the physical changes.

"Some people say losing weight is in the mind," said Judith Horvath, director of the psychotherapy training program at Texas Tech's Health Sciences Center.

The HSC psychiatrist said giving yourself a mental workout can complement healthful eating and exercise regimens.

"I think they need to go hand-in-hand," she said.

Psychological feelings make the holiday season one of the worst times of the year to embark on a program, Horvath said.

"Food can be used as emotional nourishment and to calm anxieties," she said. "The holidays stir up unfulfilled longings in people. People are reminded of the things they are missing out on."

But other emotions make losing weight hard year-round, Horvath said. Feelings of depression, a loss of control, rationalizing weight gain and low self-esteem can make losing weight seem like an impossible task, local experts said.

"Some people don't think they can allow themselves to look their best because they feel like they don't deserve to be a more attractive person," Horvath said.

Most of the morbidly obese patients treated at Lubbock's Advanced Bariatric Surgery Center are depressed, said David Syn, a bariatric surgeon who opened the practice in 2002. Many of them give up the antidepressants when they shed their extra pounds, he said.

They might also feel like they're losing a friend, like they must reach their ideal weight to succeed, or like they've already failed.

"If you look at the laundry list of diets they've tried on their own and failed, that can't have a positive impact on someone's psyche," Syn said.

Syn helps his patients overcome their overeating through surgery, counseling and education, he said.

"One of the great misunderstandings about what I do is that it's just surgery," said Syn, who spends hours with his patients before surgery and follows most for many years after.

"We are empowering people to take back their lives," he said.

Horvath said people striving for less dramatic weight loss can benefit from including family and friends in the process or talking to a professional.

The Texas Tech HSC Psychiatry Clinic provides a free counseling program for patients planning to lose weight, she said.

People should try to find distractions that help them stay away from food, Horvath said.

"They have to find out how to deal with the loss of satisfaction eating provides them," she said. "It's about exchanging the reward of food for the reward of achieving their goals."

A campaign in communist North Korea against untidy and foreign hairstyles was launched on the orders of leader Kim Jong-Il, a South Korean welfare group says.

Official media in the isolated state said last month that men should keep their hair short and women should have it tied up.

"To keep your hair tidy and simple... is a very important matter for setting the ethos of a sound lifestyle in the country," ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun said at the time.

Seoul-based Good Friends, in its latest newsletter seen Wednesday, said the order came from Kim himself and was being enforced by the Central Youth Union Committee, a state body.

It quoted officials of the body as saying Kim took objection to what he saw as the foreign hairstyle of a female sales clerk.

"Is she really our own Korean woman? Why is she giving up our own traditional beauty and choosing to model bad foreign habits of the capitalist?" they quoted Kim as saying.

The leader also ordered that women should not wear skirts above the knee, tight trousers, flared trousers or any garment that reveals the body's contours, according to the newsletter.

Our hair is an extremely valuable asset to our appearance and well being. The loss of hair can be harrowing and quite life changing. The advancement in hair transplantation has reversed all of the strife and anguish for people who find themselves in this unsettling situation. Medical Hair Restoration are specialists in hair transplant surgery and now offer an even more exceptional experience for those suffering with acute hair loss.
You no longer have to shy away from the possibility of surgery. The opportunity to improve your hair's appearance and boost your confidence levels has never been simpler. Men and women all over South Africa can benefit from the medical treatments offered by Medical Hair Restoration.

Medical advancements in hair loss transplants offer patients even better results after surgery has been completed. Medical Hair Restoration offers the Trichophytic procedure which hair surgeons use to seamlessly close the edges of a patient's scar.

Once the surgery has been completed, there may be a series of fine linear scars visible. These scars are usually 1-2mm in width. Sometimes, the scar may be wider for several reasons, this may be because, the patient's connective tissue is weak, the edges of the scar have been closed to untidily, or there is too much tension which means that the scar can become a cosmetic issue.

This is where Trichophytic cessation works magically.

All patients want a scar free surgery, and there is an expectation that a thin scar will or may remain. However, with regard to clients who will wear their hair in a short style, patients will want an almost invisible finish. With this evolutionary closing technique, mini Trichophytic closure, the surgeon can optimise the linear scar completely. This closure procedure is the latest in hair surgery in South Africa.

Athletes put their skin through more and are exposed to the elements (i.e., sun, wind, rain, chlorine) more than sedentary people. Athletes are consistently sweating, training and showering, which leads to excessive loss of moisture to the skin and hair. Most city water systems contain chlorine; once the pores are opened from a warm shower or bath, the skin absorbs chlorine like a sponge. Chlorinated water can cause or exacerbate dry skin and rashes, and the inhaled steam can aggravate sinuses and lungs.
But chlorine is not the only chemical of concern. Adults put up to 126 unique chemicals on their skin each day, and up to 60 percent of what is put on the skin is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. One of every five adults are potentially exposed every day to all of the top seven carcinogenic impurities common to personal care product ingredients: hydroquinone, ethylene dioxide, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, nitrosamines, PAHs, and acrylamide. The top most common impurity ranked by number of people exposed is hydroquinone, which is a potential contaminant in products used daily by 94 percent of all women and 69 percent of all men. Although these exposures may be small, they add up within the body. How do these affect an athlete’s performance in the long run?
With the recent crop of media attention about chemicals in drinking water, lead levels in cosmetics and phthalates showing up everywhere, more athletes (whatever their performance level) are looking for an organic and natural approach to personal care products. This goes hand-in-hand with their already diligent approach to their exercise, food and supplement regimen.
Another good reason why athletes should also be using our Sense Beautiful Science skin care line in addition to other selected USANA nutritional products.

Results of a 1 year study on over 4,500 consumers provided data on attitudes and action taken by people regarding hair loss and validated the efforts to disseminate vital information for the HairMax LaserComb

Dec 2009

Lexington Intl, manufacturer of the HairMax LaserComb, the only laser phototherapy device cleared for marketing by the FDA, announces the findings of a major 12 month study on hair loss.
Over 4,500 male and female consumers responded to the survey which generated a wealth of data on peoples’ perception of hair loss and the actions they took to treat their condition.

Respondents were asked to complete a 16 question multiple choice survey and were also asked to provide open ended comments at the end. Data generated from the study by age of respondents mirrored the incidence of hair loss found in the general population.

Treatment Patterns

One of the main goals of the survey was to discover which factors influenced their decision to treat their hair loss and what action they took. While the result showed, as expected that over two thirds of respondents were ‘dissatisfied with their appearance’, almost 40% of respondents indicated that lack of confidence or a ‘negative impact on social or job situations’ was a key factor in seeking treatment.

The findings also highlighted how important it is for physicians to become fully knowledgeable about the device as over 45% of respondents visited a doctor and of these 41% sought advice from a dermatologist.

Finally, the study confirmed the cost involved in treating hair loss in that while almost two third of respondents indicated that they spend up to $25 a month in treatment for their hair, almost 20% spend up to $50 per month.

Of those who purchased products to treat their hair loss, almost 50% purchased minoxidil, while almost 40% had purchased vitamins and herbal supplements in an effort to try to ameliorate their condition.

It was meant to be a night to remember, but Nazia Ahmed (name changed) would like to forget it soon. On the night she got married to Abdul Akhtar Hussain Sayyed, 27, Nazia found out that he was bald, something hidden from her till that point.

Nazia, a 25-year-old arts graduate from Mumbai University, married Abdul on Thursday, December 3, with the consent of elders. Nazia's mother, a widow, is teaching Arabic to locals in Agripada.

After the wedding, the newlyweds went to a south Mumbai hotel. On reaching the hotel, Abdul surprised Nazia by removing his wig and exposing his bald pate. A shocked Nazia stormed out of the hotel and rushed home.

She then narrated the incident to her mother and relatives who decided to lodge a complaint of cheating against Abdul and his father, Akhtar Hussain Abdul Sayyed, 53.

Later, the relatives found out that the gold ornaments given by Akhtar during the wedding, which they thought the value of was Rs5 lakh, were artificial, said Nazia's relative Arif.

"Abdul and his father were booked under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) IPC." said senior police inspector Praveen Gosavi of Agripada police station and added that the duo had been released on bail of Rs5,000 each by the Mazgaon metropolitan magistrate's court on Saturday.

Abdul and his father are residents of Jogeshwari but have been working in Dubai for the past several years, said Gosavi.

The next generation in scalp coolers will be showcased by Paxman Coolers next month, providing cancer patients with the best possible chance of retaining their hair whilst undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

The loss of hair during cancer treatments is a traumatic and psychologically devastating side effect and a constant reminder of the disease.

Paxman's cooling caps aim to minimise patient distress with figures showing that on average 70-90% of patients who use the system do not require a wig.

Paxman Coolers will be unveiling their new NPAX1 scalp cooler at Arab Health - attracting potential business partners from across the Middle East.

Made from lightweight, silicone tubing, the Paxman scalp cooling cap is soft and flexible creating a snug yet comfortable cap during treatment.

Moulding to all head shapes and sizes, the specially developed liquid coolant passes through the cap extracting heat from the patient's scalp, ensuring the scalp remains at an even, constant temperature; minimising hair loss.

The caps are worn 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy, during the treatment itself and for a period of time after infusion of the chemotherapy depending on the toxicity of the drugs.

With straightforward programming and controls, including recommended cooling time guides, the new generation cooling cap system is not only effective, but uncomplicated.

The cap is connected to a cutting edge and easy to use refrigeration system which uses an up-to-the-minute touch screen display, and simple switch operation, making it easy for both the patient and staff to operate.

Managing Director Glenn Paxman is hoping Arab Health will allow the company to expand their links with the Middle East:

"Arab Health will allow us to platform our products on an international stage and establish links with potential business partners from across the UAE; enabling us to expand on our already buoyant overseas market."

Increasing numbers of men are turning to hair transplants in a bid to beat baldness with the number of operations carried out increasing almost five-fold in five years
Dec 2009

It is thought the increasing popularity is due to celebrities making it more acceptable to undergo the surgery - which typically costs £3,000 - to beat hair loss.

Actor James Nesbitt and comedian Rob Brydon have both been spotted with thicker thatches this year promping rumours they've undergone treatment.

New figures released by leading hair transplant provider, The Hospital Group, show a 444 per cent growth in treatment between 2004 and 2009.

During the first nine months of this year 1,166 hair restoration procedures were performed.

The cosmetic surgery group, which carries out more hair transplants than any other British clinic, also saw the amount of treatments for women rise by 300 per cent over the five year period.

Dr Peter Williams, of The Hospital Group, said: "There seem to be more younger people losing their hair these days. It has also become more of an issue when men and women suffer from hair loss.

"Both men and women can be left feeling frustrated about losing their hair. For women, it can be very embarrassing, with stress causing patches to fall out.

"For men, it is more likely to be hereditary and something they feel they can't change. The effects of hair loss can cause irritation, anxiety of even suicidal depression.

"Hair transplants have become more acceptable because celebrities have no problem with talking about it. The technology has gradually improved and the results are a lot more natural.

A woman whose hair was falling out had her breasts and private parts fondled by an "alternative doctor" who claimed that doing so would make it grow back in, a court heard.

The woman, 28, said pressure of work as an online journalist had made her hair fall out.

The condition prompted her to seek Western, Chinese and even steroid treatment.

Then, through a priest she knew from university, she came to consult the accused, Chan Tung-choi, 68, who claimed he was an alternative medicine therapist.

Chan, who denies four counts of indecent assault, also claimed to have studied Western medicine in the United States.

Eastern Magistrates' Court heard that when the woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - met Chan for the first time in his Sheung Wan clinic in September 2005, he persuaded her to buy a package of 10 massage treatments for HK$2,000.

A few months later, she said, during a massage in the middle of winter, Chan told her to strip off.

She said he then touched her private parts and said he was trying to "stimulate her locus." In early 2006 when she went for the next round of treatment, she told the court, he fondled her breasts and said she needed more intensive "sex therapy" to help her hair grow.

When she discussed Chan's therapy with friends, they told her they had never heard of such a method.

The woman told the court Chan became even more aggressive in September and October 2006.

At these visits to his clinic he kissed her breasts, forced her to accept his kisses and hinted at having sex with her, the court was told.

Bad hair days may be over

Bad hair days may be over, with scientists hoping to develop a pill to make hair straighter or curlier.

Australian researchers have discovered the gene that causes curly hair.

They are developing a treatment that could spell the end of hair straighteners.

Would you take a pill to beat a bad hair day? Have your say below

The discovery will also make it possible to predict if a baby will have straight or curly hair.

And it may even help police, with DNA found at the scene of the crime indicating how wavy a suspect's locks are.

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research team identified the trichohyalin gene as being responsible for creating hair curls.

Although it was known to play a role in the development of the hair follicle, the scientists have discovered its role in hair curliness.

Researcher Professor Nick Martin said a variation in the gene determined the straightness or curliness of hair.

It may be possible to come up with treatments to make hair straighter rather than relying on heated hair straighteners, he said.

"Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair directly," he said.

Almost all of the 3000 women aged 25 and over who were polled said they would be ashamed to say they were losing their hair

Dec 2009

The stresses of modern life have left one in three women over the age of 25 suffering from hair loss, research has revealed.

Experts believe a major cause is society's obsession with being thin.

This leads women to eat less as they try to imitate the skinny frames of celebrities, which means they are not getting enough nutrients which, in turn, is causing their hair to thin or even fall out.

A survey found that 37 per cent of women have experienced hair loss to some degree, with serious thinning a problem for 4.8million women in the UK.

Researchers argue that because the phenomenon is regarded as something that happens only to women in old age, the hair loss itself is adding to stress levels, accelerating the process.

Almost all of the 3,000 women aged 25 and over who were polled said they would be ashamed to say they were losing their hair.

A third of the women said hair loss made them depressed, while a quarter said their personal lives had been affected.

Trichologist Sara Allison said: 'We are all leading more emotionally stressful lives and are more nutritionally deficient than previous generations.

'The pressure on women to stay thin often means that they simply don't eat enough to get all the nutrients or they are not eating the right foods.

'Hair is essentially the least important tissue of your body; therefore, your hair only receives nutrients if there are any remaining in the body after your vital organs have taken what they need.'

Dr Linda Papadopoulos, a psychologist, said: 'In Western culture, hair is bound up in notions of femininity, youth and sexual attractiveness.

Hair Loss Problems

Alopecia Areata

This is normally first noticed as a small bald patch on the scalp. Usually a number of patches in an area of the scalp develop and eventually join up to form larger patches. A patch can sometimes form overnight, so that the hairs that are shed are found on the pillow in the morning.

This can be a very frightening experience for someone when it happens for the first time. The skin in the patch is usually pale and glossy, with no hairs present. The hairs around the patch are usually short and of a frayed appearance that can easily be pulled out, which is the last thing that should be done.

The cause of alopecia areata is not fully understood by doctors. Some people have a family history that could suggest a genetic link. However stress and shock have been blamed as reasons for the problem, while very often there is just no explanation at all.

Often the hair regrows on its own accord after about a month, while at other times the bald patch will clear up completely only to move to another area of the scalp.

Medical advice should be sought as worrying about the condition can actually make it worse. Whilst there is no actual cure for the condition, just being reassured that you are not suffering from some major disease, will help ease the distress this problem can cause.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has become the latest follically challenged cricketer to sign up for an advertising campaign with the Advanced Hair Studio.

AHS has a record of treating cricketers and using them in advertising campaigns. Both Australia's Shane Warne and England's Graham Gooch have had their revamped pates featured in the company's ads.

The hair studio said Vaughan had received its Strand-by-Strand procedure, which it describes as a "cosmetic process involving the application of a non-surgical graft of synthesised second skin to the thinning areas to which hair is inserted".

Speaking about the decision to bring in Vaughan, AHS chairman, Carl Howell said: "The main reason we can bring in all these great ambassadors is because our programmes do the job."

However AHS recently found itself under fire from the Advertising Standards Authority over its ads featuring Warne. The ASA branded the campaign, which was also for the Strand-by-Strand procedure, as misleading because it implied it could stop hair loss and cause it to regrow.

Speaking about the upcoming South Africa vs England Test series and his treatment Vaughan said: "There were certainly times captaining England when I was tearing my hair out. The game takes its toll.

One of their lawyers, contended that Global Vision Products' advertising referred to a clinic that didn't exist

Dec 2009

An Alameda County, Calif., jury late last month returned a $50 million verdict in a class action that sought relief for Californians who'd bought Avacor, a hair-loss remedy that was marketed as an all-natural, clinically tested product.

Attorneys fees have yet to be decided, said L. Timothy Fisher, of Walnut Creek, Calif., firm Bramson, Plutzik, Mahler & Birkhaeuser. New York lawyer Scott Bursor and New York firm Faruqi & Faruqi also represented the plaintiffs.

There were about 150,000 purchases of Avacor in California during the class period, but since some were reorders, the exact size of the class is unclear, Fisher said.

The outcome against two defendants marked the second trial victory in the same class action for the plaintiff lawyers. The earlier trial had ended in a $40 million win against different defendants, but Fisher said the awards from the trials will not be added together, and he expects the court will order that $50 million in all be returned to the class.

Both trials took place before Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman.

The defendants in the latest trial were two officers of Global Vision Products Inc., Robert DeBenedictis and Henry Edelson -- a court stay after the company's 2007 bankruptcy filing had kept them out of the earlier one. DeBenedictis was represented by Peter Hart and Michael Collins of LeClairRyan's San Francisco and New York offices, respectively. Edelson was recently representing himself and did not appear at trial.

One of DeBenedictis' lawyers said his client was just an investor and not directly participating in the company in its early years, and that he planned to appeal.

"Once he became involved in 2004, he took every effort he possibly could to get the company back on the straight and narrow and get its advertising in compliance with the Better Business Bureau and the Food and Drug Administration," Hart said. "We think the jury looked at his position and made the leap that just because he was president, he was responsible." To bolster that thought, he noted that the jury had found in DeBenedictis' favor on allegations of conspiracy with defendants from the earlier trial.

The study will continue research on linking a defect in lipid processing and peroxisome biogenesis to cicatricial alopecia

Dec 2009

The National Institutes of Health has awarded Pratima Karnik, Ph.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University, a grant of $1.77 million to fund a five-year study titled “PPAR-gamma Signaling in Normal Pilosebaceous Units and in Scarring Alopecia,” reports the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation (CARF).

The study will continue research on linking a defect in lipid processing and peroxisome biogenesis to cicatricial alopecia.

The CARF statement quotes Dr. Karnik as saying, “In preliminary studies that formed the basis of the NIH award, we provided insight into highly complex interactions between hair follicle cells and environmental factors that may cause cicatricial alopecia.

This funding provides us the support necessary to aggressively test novel ideas aimed at understanding progression of these diseases and the development of novel therapeutic strategies.”

In December 2008, Dr. Karnik and her research team published findings that unprocessed lipids set the stage for developing scarring hair loss. The work suggests that either processed lipids are necessary for hair growth or unprocessed lipids are toxic.

The research indicates that irrespective of how stressful a woman's life is, there are greater forces at play which are more likely to cause her hair to grey

Dec 2009

A woman's genes are much more likely than lifestyle factors such as stress or diet to cause greying hair, a study suggests.

Unilever scientists studied more than 200 identical and non-identical Danish twin sisters aged between 59 and 81.

The scientists found little difference between the greyness of the identical twins - who share the same genes.

But there was more difference between non-identical twins, whose genes differ, the study found.

The study, published in the journal PLoS One, also suggests receding hair is linked to mainly genetic factors.

But it indicates hair-thinning on the top of the head is connected to environmental and lifestyle factors.

On the issue of greying hair, lead researcher Dr David Gunn said although many theories had been put forward to explain different rates of greying, there was little hard scientific evidence to back them up.

He said: "This study offers us a fascinating insight into the reason why women go grey and it certainly suggests that environmental factors are not as important as we once thought.

"The research indicates that irrespective of how stressful a woman's life is, there are greater forces at play which are more likely to cause her hair to grey."

Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, said previous work had also found few identifiable environmental factors among people who went grey much earlier than their relatives.

Fish oil and healthy skin

Fish oil containing the Omega 3 essential fatty acid EPA helps to prevent wrinkles and can delay the aging process of the skin according to recent research published in the Journal of Lipid Research in 2005. Scientists have also found that fish oil containing EPA can limit the damage to the skin produced by overexposure to the sun and help to reduce the negative effect of UV rays. This has particular relevance when we consider the recent and dramatic rise in cases of skin cancers caused predominantly by exposure to the suns harmful rays.

Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are known to play a critical role in promoting healthy skin. They help to regulate cellular function and maintain elasticity and suppleness in the skin. Consequently, a fatty acid deficiency will show up as skin problems. Most of us do not get enough of the Omega 3 fatty acids in our diet whereas Omega 6 fatty acids are in plentiful supply. Symptoms of Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency include skin problems like eczema, dandruff, dry and flaking skin and poor wound healing.

Three reasons why EPA is so beneficial to the skin?

  • EPA is known to reduce inflammation by helping the body to produce anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. These are hormone-like substances that are responsible for regulating all the cells in our body.
  • EPA helps to inhibit the production of androgens, which are hormones that influence the production of sebum in the hair follicle. Excess sebum production can lead to acne and other skin problems.
  • EPA helps to limit production of Arachidonic acid, which is responsible for pro-inflammatory responses in the body, high levels of which are found in people with inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis.

The Omega 3 fatty acids are ALA, EPA and DHA. Alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is found in dark green leafy vegetables and algae. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) can be found in oily fish such as salmon, herring, anchovies, mackerel and Tuna. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can also be found in oily fish. We can convert ALA to EPA and DHA but the conversion is very inefficient and dependent on a number of factors. However, we can convert EPA into DHA if we get enough EPA.

Supplementing with fish oil that contains EPA can alleviate the symptoms of skin disorders such as dry and flaky skin, psoriasis, eczema and acne as well as many other inflammatory skin conditions. However, it is important to choose a fish oil that is high in EPA as DHA has been shown to reduce the effectiveness of EPA.

Fish oil supplements can contain mercury. To be safe take only a pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplement.

In response to the ASA Council overturning its ‘not up held’ adjudication on an Advanced Hair Studio advertisement, Carl Howell, founder and chairman said:

“As the world’s largest international Hair Restoration Company founded in Australia, it is extremely frustrating conducting business in the UK when your advertising is approved by the local authorities, only to have them change their minds years later for no logical reason.”

“The UK Government and Advertising Authorities should look at the business model here in Australia when it comes to advertising practise as the best way to handle these approval issues”

“It is frustrating, if not baffling, when you have followed the advice of CAP (Committee of Advertising Practice) and the ASA to get a result like this. We ensured that that particular advertisement met the code of compliance and received approval to advertise. Our advert was also approved by the ASA in its first adjudication.

“This process, initiated by one unidentified complainant, has taken over two years to resolve and the initial decision in our favour was overturned without any further arguments presented against us.

“We were even upheld for using a word to describe a product that CAP also used on its own website. This ruling by the ASA is all a matter of semantics over the words ‘approved’, ‘cleared’ or alternatively’.

“What is not in doubt is that the US Food and Drug Administration recognise that the laser device we use in our AHS-FP programme stimulates hair growth in men suffering from male pattern baldness.

A new application for the iPhone meant to help against wrinkles, cellulite and even hair loss will be released early next year.

Danny Salomon, vice president at United Holdings Group, has developed the dubious 'AntiAgeingApp,' which will sell at $2.99 on iTunes and is currently causing debate on the internet.

According to the company, the new application will use color, light and sound therapy to "heal" wrinkles, acne, and cellulite and even stimulate hair growth.

"The healing strategy makes use of the wavelengths of light and sound in order to stimulate the body's natural defense systems," reads an explanation by the developing team on tech site Network World. "When those cells get energized, they produce collagen and elastin. The result will be firmer and rejuvenated skin tone, and improved circulation."

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to get rid of acne scars, fine wrinkles and sunspots by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used, only aluminum oxide micro crystals that gently sandblast your skin, leaving it smooth and fresh. Micro dermabrasion also stimulates collagen production, helping your skin rejuvenate faster than normal. Also called the lunchtime peel, microderm abrasion takes up to one hour and has no downtime.

What Is The Difference Between Microdermabrasion And Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a mechanical procedure that uses a power driver hand-held device to remove the top layers of the skin. It may need general or a local anesthetic, depending on the treated area. Derma abrasion lasts between a few minutes and two hours, depending on the depth and area of the skin resurfacing. After dermabrasion treatment, the skin is red, swollen and extremely sensitive for about 10 days. Dermabrasion can offer visible improvement by treating deep wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation.

Microabrasion is much less invasive. It can be performed in an beauty center, doctor's office or at home, using a personal home micro dermabrasion kit. A doctor uses a sandblaster-like hand-held device to spray and circulate high pressure flow of aluminum oxide crystals onto the skin. Used crystals and dead skin cells are then vacuumed back into the microdermabrasion machine, leaving the skin clean and smooth.

Starting early next year we will begin offering esthetic services at Bella Pelle Laser. In case you wondered, Bella Pelle means Beautiful Skin in Italian.

Face’ Shape Matters

A lot of times or moments when a special hairstyle is necessary, but no matter what the occasion is, you can have the appealing hairstyle that is suitable for you. The choice of the right hairstyle could be very difficult. The most important thing to remember is that it should be maximized the best features of your face, basically the shape. Aside from it, the nature of your hair is also one of the most important factors. Examine it whether it is thick or thin, straight or curly, coarse or wavy before choosing the best hairstyle for you. Here are some tips on what hairstyle is best for you, according to face’ shape:
Shape of Faces:
LONG FACE / OBLONG
-A short, perky bob hairstyle would be attractive for you. It should be short at the back and the angled chin length at the front. With bang brushed to the side, rounds out an oblong face. Long hair, would just make your face longer or lengthier.
SQUARE FACE
-A wide forehead and square jawbone. If your hair is thick, you can go all one length. If it is fine, you can have a slight angle in front. Blunt clipped bangs are not recommended because they just emphasize the squareness of your face.
OVAL FACE
-When a person has this kind of face, you are very lucky! Any hairstyle will suit you. Just don’t go on severe long hairdo that will only make your face look longer.

Peel It Off

Chemical peels are used to reduce scars, fine lines and pigmentation caused by acne, sun spots, or wrinkles due to aging. The chemical applied allows molecules to sink into the skin and will cause a tingling effect. The chemical can stay on the skin from 1 to 10 minutes and then it neutralizes or cools and is removed. As the chemicals seep into the skin, they boost collagen while lifting off the top layer, or the epidermis, of the skin. This causes a peeling effect. After a layer of skin peels off, it reveals the second layer or the dermis, which has fresher, tighter cells that are not as damaged.

Where, Oh Where?

Some mild chemical peel solutions may be applied to the face, neck and chest. More aggressive chemical peel solutions may only be applied to the face, avoiding the eyebrows, eyes, lips or any sensitive areas of the skin. The milder peel may be performed every 1 to 4 weeks, or as recommended by your physician or esthetician. A more aggressive peel may only be done once, after consulting a specialist or dermatologist. After any peel, the skin will likely feel tight, as if it is sunburned or wind burned. You may be given special moisturizer or a gentle cleanser to avoid irritation post-procedure.

Types of Peels

There are many types of chemical peels from superficial to deep. The most superficial can be done in the morning and a patient can then go to work, while a stronger peel may require a patient to take medication following the procedure and scabbing or excessive peeling may occur. Deciding which chemical peel is right for your skin requires a specialist, such as a dermatologist, or a certified professional, such as an esthetician.

Chemicals Used

There are different chemicals used depending on your skin type. A glycolic acid peel is an option, as is a salicylic, carbonic or lactic acid peel. These peels may be put on a patient's skin for 1 minute and up to 10 minutes. A deeper peel is a phenol peel which can take up to 2 hours and could take up to 2 weeks for the skin to heal. This is a serious procedure that can bleach treated areas or cause blistering. Always consult a dermatologist before undergoing this procedure.

Instead of getting a swine flu or other flu vaccine, Dr. Northrup suggests following what our Northern neighbors are doing to truly prevent the swine flu—taking vitamin D. Last year, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) began a multi-year study to see whether adequate vitamin D levels helped to prevent the flu. Although originally designed to study the seasonal flu, PHAC has now modified the study to examine the correlation between vitamin levels and those who contract the H1N1 swine flu virus. Dr. Northrup commends Canada for their forward thinking.

Since 2006, Dr. Northrup has been teaching women (and men) everywhere about the protective, health-enhancing qualities of the sunshine vitamin. Optimal levels of vitamin D (40–80 ng/ml) enhance the creation and functioning of healthy cells throughout the body.1 In addition to protecting the bones and boosting the immune system, studies show that vitamin D helps prevent certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and colorectal.23 45 Exciting new research shows that in the U.S. alone, thousands of new cases of breast cancer could be prevented every year if more women had optimal levels of vitamin D.6

Vitamin D also benefits the immune system, as studies by prominent vitamin D researchers have shown. This year, Adit Ginde, M.D. published a study conducted with about 19,000 adults and teens which found that those with low levels of vitamin D were 40 percent more likely to come down with a cold, the flu, or other respiratory infections.7 In the past, John J. Cannell and Michael Hollick, the granddaddies of vitamin D research, have published numerous studies showing similar correlations. (For more information, visit the Vitamin D Council web site.) It appears that vitamin D has antimicrobial properties that kick in when the body is exposed to these kinds of germs.8

As we all know, when some people get the flu, it’s mild and they recover quickly while others develop secondary infections, like pneumonia, or asthma and other serious conditions. PHAC plans to study if there’s a correlation between vitamin D levels and whether a person develops a severe case of the flu. Dr. Northrup says, “This makes sense. A study done on 208 post-menopausal African Americans showed that women who received 800 IUs per day of vitamin D were three times less likely to get a cold or flu, regardless of the season, when compared to women who took no vitamin D. And when the women studied were given 2,000 IUs per day, virtually none came down with either kind of virus.”9

PHAC also plans to examine whether genetics play a role.

Although it’s likely to take at least three flu seasons before enough information can be gathered and interpreted, Dr. Northrup is willing to guess that the results will shine a light on the sunshine vitamin’s effectiveness. “With all this talk about healthcare reform, I’m encouraged to see a country take a stand for prevention. I can picture a much healthier world, not because of a vaccine or a pill, but because people everywhere have adequate levels of vitamin D.”

Dr. Northrup continues, “If you do nothing else for yourself or your family this year, do this one thing: maintain an optimal level of vitamin D. In my opinion, this is 52 ng/mls or higher, but no higher than 100 ng/ml. (The current consensus among vitamin D researchers is 40–80 ng/ml or as high as 100 ng/ml.) A simple blood test will tell you where your stand. Then you’ll either get about 2,000 IUs per day to maintain a healthy level, or take a little more until your levels have been restored.

“This is true health care!” Dr. Northrup enthuses.

For more on boosting your immune system and protecting against the flu, read “Build Your Immunity!” in the Women’s Wisdom Circle. For more on vitamin D’s many benefits, read “How Natural Light Recharges Your Health” also in the Wisdom Circle.

EDMONTON, Oct. 25, 2009 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) --

Just three months of physical activity reaps heart health benefits for older adults with type 2 diabetes by improving the elasticity in their arteries - reducing risk of heart disease and stroke, Dr. Kenneth Madden told the 2009 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.

Dr. Madden studied adults between the ages of 65 to 83 with controlled Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol to see how increased activity might affect stiffness of the arteries.

"The theory is that aerobic activity makes your arteries less stiff and makes artery walls more elastic," says Dr. Madden, a geriatric specialist at the University of British Columbia.

An improvement was seen in the elasticity of the arteries of the group that performed the activity compared to those who didn't exercise. "There was an impressive drop in arterial stiffness after just three months of exercise. In that time we saw a 15 to 20 per cent reduction."

The subjects were divided into two groups to either receive three months of vigorous physical activity (one hour, three times per week) or to get no aerobic exercise at all. Subjects were classified as sedentary at the beginning of the study but gradually increased their fitness levels until they were working at 70 per cent of their maximum heart rate, using treadmills and cycling machines. They were supervised by a certified exercise trainer.

Dr. Beth Abramson, spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, stresses the importance of lifestyle factors on heart health, especially with our aging population. "Almost everyone can benefit from active living," she says. "The Foundation recommends that, like adults of any age, older adults - with the consent of their physicians - need 30 to 60 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week."

Dr. Madden says that the exercise requirements may be viewed as controversial because of the age of the participants but the exercise level was safe and well tolerated. "There seems to be a knee-jerk reluctance to getting these older adults to exercise yet we used a vigorous level of activity and didn't have any trouble keeping participants in our study. They enjoyed the activity," Dr. Madden says. "People always underestimate what older adults can do."

Dr. Madden notes that realistically, seniors need someone to help them get started. "We need to learn how to do it effectively and how to do it safely," he says. "It could mean visiting your family doctor to find out about provincially funded programs, or joining programs for seniors that are offered at many local community centres."

Dr. Abramson recommends that seniors choose activities they enjoy, such as walking, gardening, golfing, dancing, or joining a yoga or tai chi class. If weather is a barrier, she suggests climbing stairs at home, joining a mall-walking group, or strolling the halls of their apartment building or retirement residence.

In his next project, Dr. Madden wants to find out if there is a less expensive but equally effective way to reduce the stiffness of arteries in older adults. "Our first step was to prove that it was at all possible for older adults to have reduced narrowing in their arteries due to exercise," he says. "Now we want to find out just how rigorous the levels of activity need to be to demonstrate the same results. The next step is to try studying a home-based walking program using pedometers. This is something easy for doctors to prescribe and cheap and easy for participants."

The HeartWalk Workout, a special activity program developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation to help people with cardiovascular problems get regular, healthy physical activity is available online at heartandstroke.ca. It helps people slowly build up exercise tolerance until they can walk at least 30 minutes, five times a week.

Oct. 7--Most people know that there are many benefits to maintaining a healthy diet. Longer lives, disease prevention and an ideal weight are all results of eating healthy.
But how can you know which foods to buy -- let alone which foods to eat? Now it may be easier than ever to decide.
Color is the key. If you know what you want to prevent or improve, there is probably a color associated with what you need.
Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals which are packed with vitamins and minerals. They can protect against things like the effects of aging, cancer and heart disease said Heather Boline, a registered dietitian at Freeman Health System.
Fruits and vegetables are categorized by color. These categories can help alert the healthy consumer of what benefits the fruit or vegetable has in store.
These color categories include red, blue/purple, yellow/orange, white and green.
Those in the white category, such as bananas, garlic, onions and potatoes, help with heart health, lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of some cancers. Cantaloupes, mangoes and sweet potatoes are all part of the yellow/orange category and help with the eye and heart health. Green grapes, kiwis, broccoli and spinach also help with vision and reducing the risk of cancer.
"Blueberries have the phytochemical anthocyanin which helps reduce age effects," said Boline.
If you are still unsure of how much of all these fruit and vegetables you need, there is a Web site that can figure it for you.
The site, created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can be found at www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov. The site considers your age, gender and activity level to measure how many cups of "fruits and veggies" you need in a day.
The CDC also recognizes the significance of the colors of fruits and vegetables.
"To get a healthy variety, think color. Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients," according to the CDC site.
To make the benefits of fruits and vegetables more available -- and more appetizing -- there are lots of things you can do, said Boline.
"Try to buy different kinds of fruits and vegetables. Buy juices that are 100 percent juice, not juices with high-fructose corn syrup," she said. "Try to keep fruit on your counter at home or on your desk at work. You're more likely to eat it that way."
Boline also suggests keeping some vegetables cut up in your fridge.
"You're more likely to eat them if (the vegetables) are already ready to eat," said Boline.
There are also some treats you can make if a carrot just won't satisfy your sweet tooth. Smoothies, she said, are easy to make and a good way to get children to eat more fruit.
Boline also suggested low-fat, plain yogurt and adding your own fruit, such as frozen blueberries.
"The fact that the CDC is promoting 'More Matters' says a lot about disease prevention," said Boline.
"Fruits and Veggies -- More Matters" is an initiative by the CDC and the Produce for Better Health Foundation to promote an increase in fruits and vegetables in everyone's diet.
"Compared with people who consume a diet with only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, including stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers," according to the CDC.

A lot of people don't consider food as a cause of hair loss, as you try to understand it. It is possible..A healthy diet can promote a healthy hair, an unhealthy diet can lead to significant loss. Maintain a healthy diet that has servings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats and dairy in moderation.
For men, a low-fat diet may help slow down the balding process. On some level, male pattern baldness might be tied to increased testosterone levels during puberty, which are often the result of a high-fat diet or eating too many animal products.
Hair loss in women is often difficult to diagnose and can be caused by many factors, including alopecia areata, hormone imbalances, menopause, dietary protein and amino acid deficiency, intestinal parasites, damage from hair treatments, and stress.
Nutritional deficits caused by extreme weight loss programs can make some people lose hair. The follicles require nutrients, just as the rest of your body does. Ensuring that your diet is filled with healthy foods can promote a healthy hair.
Processed foods has chemicals that can create health problems including hair loss for many individuals. Here are some foods to avoid if you are having hair loss problems:
> Aspartame is a synthetic sweetener that can actually lead to more problems than the refined white sugar, including hair loss.
> Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) may lead to health problems including losing hair.
> Refined white sugar has taken most of the natural elements in the sweetener out. Stick to natural sugar.
> White flour has been over-processed. Many of the nutrients in the grains that make the flour have been removed, leaving little to benefit the body.
> Hydrogenated oils may cause hair loss indirectly as they lead to other health conditions related to losing hair.
> Protein isolate may sound like a healthy option but this is an artificial element that involves hexane in its processing. Hexane is similar to gasoline.

This is a question we often receive. The answer is tricky. First the Legal answer:

  • The FDA says that laser hair removal isn't permanent hair removal but permanent hair reduction.
As you saw in the earlier post the FDA only says that electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal process.

Now the longer answer:

Electrolysis works by inserting a thin needle down the hair follicle and using an electrical current to kill the hair follicle. So that follicle is then permanently disabled, but the one immediately next to it will still be growing hair.

Laser hair removal has the same effect on the hair follicles, but the treatment is only effective when the hair is in its growth mode.

So is laser hair removal permanent? For all intents and purposes, yes. But if there is a hair follicle which was always between growth stages at each treatment time, then it will still be growing.

electrolysis can take maybe 20-30 sessions to clear an area. Laser takes 5-7. but you may need touch ups periodically (once-twice a year) to catch the hairs which were missed during the initial treatments, but unless there are hormonal problems, 99.9% of the hair will be gone.

Friday, October 16, 2009

What is Electrolysis?

What It Is : The only method of hair removal that is permitted to be called "permanent," electrolysis uses a tiny needle that slides down into the hair follicle until it reaches the cells responsible for hair growth.

"Electrolysis destroys the cells that cause the hair to grow. The hair will release and slide right out and it won't grow back there again -- it's permanent removal," says Patsy Kirby, executive director of the American Electrology Association in Bodega Bay, Calif.

The process can be uncomfortable, but local anesthetic creams can help.

Best For : Like other forms of hair removal, it is safe to do electrolysis anywhere on the body, though Kirby says the most popular place for women is the face.

How Long It Takes : Though the system requires that the removal be done hair-by-hair, Kirby says it's not as daunting a task as it might seem. "It can take up to 25 sessions, depending on how much you need removed, but each session may only be 5 or 10 minutes long," says Kirby.

Cost: Costs run between $40 and $90 per treatment, with 10 to 25 treatments (or more) sometimes necessary for permanent, lasting results.

Potential Drawback : Electrolysis can cause tiny scars where the needle is inserted. Though for most people they heal unnoticed, for blacks it means an increased risk of hyperpigmentation and formation of keloids. Thus, it's not recommended for this skin type.

Coming down with the flu?

With the onslaught of swine flu throughout the global community, there is a new push towards acquiring and stockpiling drugs that can be used to treat potentially lethal strains of influenza. source
According to medical science there is a pharmaceutical treatment option available called Tamiflu, that they say will treat swine flu.
But little do consumers know that there is a natural component within this mass-produced pharmaceutical. And what is this powerful ingredient? None other than the common herb star anise.
In fact, most people are unaware that over 40% of all pharmaceutical medications come from plant botanicals, including everything from common aspirin to powerful cancer-fighting medications such as tamoxifen.

The Origins of Star Anise

Star anise, or Illicium verum, is a native plant of Asia, commonly used in traditional societies to spice food, reduce intestinal gas, aid in digestion and act as a powerful diuretic medicinal herb. It is also known to promote vitality and vigor in the human system, and is a common ingredient in the French liqueur Pernod. This fragrant, licorice-spiced plant is now playing a starring role in one of the most sought-after drugs on the planet: Tamiflu.

How Star Anise Oil Can Help

One of the best ways of preventing the flu is to keep your overall health at optimum levels, through a proper diet and regular exercise routine. Star anise, in its natural form, can help the body’s immune system fight off many strains of flu, as well as many other health challenges.

Skin Health

Your skin is like a Rose:
To grow beautiful Roses you use the best fertilizer months before they bud.
For beautiful skin, bathe the cells deep within your body with the best nutrients possible... and Beautiful Skin will bloom.

Face lifts, chemical peels, microderm abrasion, and all other common facial treatments only work on the outside of your skin - But your skin has two sides! To maintain a youthful glow you need to take care of your skin from the inside as well.

The nutritional content of today’s foods is declining. Even organically grown foods. To get the nutritional content that was in an orange a century ago, you would need to eat eight oranges today! It is almost impossible to get optimal nutrition just from food alone. Our bodies are also subject to environmental stress from pollutants, pesticides, household chemicals, the sun, and even stress. Even most skin care and cosmetics have harmful preservatives and irritating chemicals, many of which are readily absorbed through the skin – This all takes toll on all your cells, your health, and shows in your skin.

But, if your cells and your skin have all the vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants available to repair any damage and fight off oxidative stress, then you’re cells will be stronger and healthier and this will result in healthier and younger looking skin.

In Today's Hype Drive World, How Do you Know Which Nutritional Supplements are the Best?

There is only one independent 3rd party scientific analysis of over 1500 supplements available in the US and Canada – “The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements”. Only one product has scored in the #1 position consistently over the past 8 years – That is the Usana Essentials.

We personally use and recommend Usana products. Aside from the #1 rating Usana products are:

  • Manufactured to the highest pharmaceutical standards
  • The only full line of nutritional supplements listed in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) for pharmaceutical drugs.
Usana was founded in 1992 by Dr. Myron Wentz, a world renowned microbiologist. Before founding Usana, Dr. Wentz owned Gull labs where he grew human cells for research and was the creator of the worlds first viral test kits which are still used in hospitals and labs throughout the world – Dr. Wentz knows what makes and keeps cells healthy!

With optimal nutrition creating a healthy glow from the inside, you then want to use a complementary skin care line. Usana’s Sensé skin care line is the first full skin care line in the world to be free of harmful parabens, formaldehyde, and other chemical preservatives.

Ever wonder how the expensive department store products can sit on the counter for days in open containers and never grow mold? Lots of preservatives! Click here to read a shocking article from the Chicago Sun Times about the cancer causing agents found in even the most expensive skin care lines, but not in Sensé!

Sensé is free of irritating “Natural” preservatives used by other skin care lines such as grapefruit oil, etc. Just because it is natural that doesn’t mean it isn’t irritating or harmful – even poison ivy is natural…

Sensé has a daytime protective emulsion which protects your skin and you from the hazards of the day and offers SPF 15 protection from UVA and UVB rays. When you're sleeping is when your body rebuilds itself and when it needs the most nourishment. The Sensé Night renewal provides the proper nutrients to let your skin repair and rebuild – You'll awaken to a new you.

The entire Sensé line provides a unique science based approach to skin health.

About every 30 days the top layer is replaced with new cells. If you begin a regime of cellular health from the inside and the out side you will begin to see significant results in a month, and in 6 months you'll be amazed at the difference in your general health, and in the appearance of your skin.

I you are in the metro Denver Boulder area come by Bella Pelle Laser Hair Removal to experience the top rated skin care and nutritionals for yourself.

‘Organic’ doesn’t quite mean the same thing whether you're in the food or in the cosmetic industry. To consumers it can mean ‘natural’, ‘green’, ‘chemical free’, or ‘found at Whole Foods’. But according to this article, the US organics market is completely confused.

http://www.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com/Products-Markets/Study-highlights-confusion-in-US-organics-market.

Primarily because there is no industry-agreed meaning for terms like ‘organic’ or ‘natural’. Unlike the farming industry, these terms are not regulated for cosmetics. Companies can pretty much claim anything is natural or organic.

For example, imagine a body wash formula. It contains all kinds of synthetic surfactants, fragrances, preservatives and colors. But it also contains 85-90% water. A company might simply claim “90% organic or natural” and be telling the truth. Certainly, this isn’t in the spirit of what people believe organic to mean, but it is within the law.

Are organic products better?
Incidentally, natural or organic cosmetic products don’t really provide any added benefit for consumers. Most companies are just fooling you when they say their products are natural. What isn’t? And for companies like Burt’s Bees who strive to make ‘organic’ or ‘all-natural’ products, their finished products are mostly functionally inferior to more mainstream products. This is the real trade-off of natural or organic products. That and an incredibly higher cost for an inferior product.

Remember cosmetics are not food. No one has ever proven there is a benefit to ‘organically’ derived cosmetics.
